Dodge 2.7 to 3.2 conversion
The Chrysler 2.7 DOHC motor is a real turd, oil problems, engine locking up, kicking out a rod, etc. You know this, thats why you are here. The dealership quoted us (with a straight face) $7200 to replace our bad engine with a rebuilt 2.7 (they still suck - a poor design is a poor design) Used engines are going at a premium - $3000 - 4000. Why? Demand. Lots of cars with blown 2.7's out there. The 3.2 SOHC motor is another story, solid and reliable, can be had cheaply. We found a used engine from a 2000 Intrepid with 117,000 miles for $650. Coool. There is also a 3.5 SOHC motor, similar to the 3.2 - I have not looked in to this engine. This is different than the first generation 3.5 that came in the first Intrepids/Concordes/Vision. Any engines within the second generation LH platform - 1998 - newer Intrepid, Concorde, 300M are interchangeable.


The following information describes what all is entailed in changing a Chrysler DOHC 2.7 to a 24V 3.2.
If you have no mechanical sense, go away. If you have access to good tools and know not to drink the anti-freeze, read on. The following is what worked for us. No guarantees it will be the same for everyone. Here is what you will need:

A complete running 3.2 engine VIN code "J" - with complete engine harness as disconnected, not hacked off. The disconnects are the same for the 2.7 and the 3.2, in the same location.
AC compressor with lines to the evaporator and the condensor (the condensor itself is the same)
P/S Pump, remote reservoir
Alternator
Starter
Radiator with external oil cooler ports (opposite side from ATX cooling ports)
radiator hoses, heater hose to the firewall, airbox elbow (connects to throttle body)
motor mount 'ears' for the 3.2 - will mount to subframe at same location as the 2.7.
throttle cable for your specific body with the 3.2 engine. Cruise cable mount will work with a little filing.

In a perfect world, try to find a totalled Intrepid, Concorde, 300M with the engine still in it - preferably running. Most yards will want to part everything out, this is why they are in business. For the right amount of money, see if they will pull everything from the same vehicle. A little extra palm grease with the dismantler will go a long way to making it a smooth project. Some yards will tell you only what the Hollander Interchange Book says, "the book says you can't do that...." Bah!!

The PCM from our 2.7 worked great with the 3.2 (the same 40 pin gray connector), yours ???
